We all have them or will eventually get them when we age, during pregnancy, or when we lose or gain weight. They have been labeled as battle scars or tiger scars, but what exactly are stretch marks? And how do we get rid of them, if that’s even possible?
Just like many women, I have recently experienced my first stretch mark and boy was it eye-opening. I always watched what I ate and consistently worked out, so I was never worried about getting them. However, I realize they have become a part of the aging process. Stretch marks also called striae, and this happens when your skin changes shape due to growth, weight gain, or weight loss. They are not a sign that something is wrong with your health and, believe it or not, both men and women can get stretch marks. But not many know that pregnancy and puberty are the two most common times in life where stretch marks appear. They start to appear as a thin red or purple lines on your skin and can happen anywhere from your arms, chest, thighs, stomach, and bottom, just to name a few. The purple or red line will take on a different texture than the surrounding skin layer. After some time, the stretch marks will fade and take on a white or almost translucent coloring. There are many home remedies that can help minimize the appearance of stretch marks.
Here are my top five home remedies:
So many people have sworn by sugar as a microdermabrasion method. Rubbing a sugar scrub on the skin will exfoliate the area. All you have to do is mix one cup of sugar with 1/4 cup of a softening agent like coconut oil, avocado oil, or almond oil. Add one tablespoon of lemon juice. Lemon juice is naturally acidic which helps heal and reduce stretch marks, acne, and other scars. Scrub the mixture on the area of your body where the stretch marks are. Just remember to repeat at least 4 times a week, while in the shower, and rub the mixture for about 10 minutes.
2. Aloe Vera
While there isn’t much clinical evidence to support aloe vera as a stretch mark healer, it does sort of make sense. Aloe is a natural healing agent and skin softener, therefore, this makes it ideal for a home remedy. Apply pure aloe vera to the stretch marks daily after your shower.
3. Coconut Oil
Stretch marks are scars from skin damage. Coconut oil might work to diminish the appearance quickly. Many studies show that coconut oil has been supportive for its healing properties and have also been found to reduce the amount of time it takes for the skin to heal. Applying extra virgin coconut oil to your stretch marks at least twice a day can reduce some of their red appearance.
4. Castor Oil
For many years, castor oil has been used to treat a number of skin issues such as wrinkles, age spots, moles, fine lines, and acne. Much research shows that it can be used to get rid of stretch marks, too. Apply about a tablespoon of castor oil to the stretch marks and massage the area for about 10 minutes. Wrap the area with a thin, cotton cloth. Use a hot water bottle or a heating pad and apply some heat to the affected area for at least 30 minutes. Repeat this process, daily, for a minimum of one month to see some results.
5. Egg Whites
Believe it or not, protein is necessary for our skin. Eggs are a great source of protein. For our stretch marks, however, use only the egg whites. Egg whites contain proteins and amino acids which support the diminishing process of stretch marks. Whip the whites of two eggs with a fork for about 2 mins, apply a thick layer of egg whites with a brush to your clean skin. Allow the egg whites to dry and then rinse the area with cold water. Once that is complete, apply some olive oil to the skin for moisture. Continue this process, daily, for at least two weeks.
I am currently using remedies 2 and 4, so I will keep you posted with my stretch mark journey. Keep in mind that these scars do not define your weakness, more so, they are part of the aging journey. You can learn to hate or love them. In my case, I am learning to love them, but with a minimal appearance. Let me know how these natural and amazing home remedies work for you.
