So many of us feel like we have to do something profound or meaningful to leave our mark on the world, such as finding the cure for cancer, finding a solution for world peace, or finding a way to overcome world hunger and poverty. We want to leave our legacy and be remembered for our kindness, humanity, and our life of service.
The good news is that we all can, in our own unique way. As the beautiful soul Mother Teresa said, “Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.” By changing the lives of people around us, they can then go out and help others, and this creates a ripple effect.
The Holy Quran says: “and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole of mankind…” – (Chapter Five, Verse 32).
I have heard countless youth say, “I’m just a student, I can’t do anything, I don’t have a talent or specialty or anything to offer the world yet!” My dears, yes you can!
What are your passions in life? What motivates you to get out of bed every morning? For me, my love in life is working with refugees around the world. I am a nurse, and my travels have taken me to Palestine, Jordan, and Greece on medical and humanitarian missions. I enjoy working with children, and have met some incredibly resilient, beautiful children who have saved my life and taught me about hope, love, and humanity. To them, nothing is impossible.
While not everyone may not have opportunities to travel around the world, there are so many opportunities right in your own community!
You can feed homeless people, visit an orphanage, sponsor a food or clothing drive, serve as a mentor to troubled youth, visit elderly people with no family, teach English to people who speak another language, do art projects with kids, plant trees and flowers, help build homes for habibat for humanity, and the list goes on and on.
Whatever your passion is, find it, pursue it, and become the change you wish to see in the world.
In this series, I hope to inspire everyone to see the beauty in the world, do our part in making the world better, and spreading love and positivity. I will be sharing stories of the people I met along the way, the refugee families, volunteers, and everyone who filled me with hope in the darkest times.
Find your passion, and pursue it with every ounce of your being.
